Boris cast an irked glance at his watch. He was hoping to spend the rest of his day over boring and uneventful paperwork in the precinct, ditch work at exactly six, and forget all about his job for the next forty-eight hours.

Boris was focused solely and entirely on Olivia Hammer, with whom he had planned to spend two whole days at a rented bungalow by the gulf, doing only two things–sex and more sex. Convincing Olivia to go away with him for the weekend took considerable effort. One of the world’s most famous supermodels had to move an already scheduled photo shoot for a fashion magazine by a whole two days.

Olivia Hammer, aka Olga Molotkova, had come to New York as a seven-year-old with her parents. Her father was an oligarch, sent to do forge business relations with American partners, and her mother an undistinguished actress of the Soviet cinema, slighted by fate and unappreciated by nearsighted directors. Having failed to achieve significant gains on the business front, her father had returned to Russia, while her mother had decided to cross the continent and settle in the global capital of the movie industry.

“Ten years from now you’ll be a movie star,” Zinaida Molotkova had said with conviction to her daughter–thin, fair-haired, with puffy freckled cheeks.

In only a few years Olivia had gotten her first television contract, thanks to the efforts of agent Fabian Dombrovsky, quick to appreciate the untamed temperament of the former Soviet actress. When Zinaida had first set foot in Fabian’s office at Belshire Avenue, she immediately locked the door behind her and proceeded to show the fairly befuddled agent, who suffered from chronic joint pains despite the generously compensated efforts of genuine charlatans and gentle bonesetters, the advantages of the Communist healing system–a type of full body massage whose origin is erroneously attributed in the West to Thailand. The aging agent had made a miraculous recovery from his chronic malady; shortly thereafter Zinaida and her daughter had moved in with Fabian.

Olivia’s career in television had begun with sitcoms, usually cast in minor roles as the daughter in a typical American family–mom, dad, three youngsters, and a dog. The daily lives of such families were incredibly complicated, full of dangerous adventures and implausible dramas that put Shakespeare to shame: the family dog giving birth to a litter of puppies, five black and one white, or the oldest son meeting his first girlfriend, and when the girl comes to meet the family, she turns out to be the neighbors’ daughter, with whom the parents have waged a zany rivalry for twenty some years. And then there is the school contest for the most original project made from toilet paper, for which the whole family comes together to build some semblance of a starship, ready to soar to the distant stars, whose denizens are apparently miserable over having nothing to wipe their asses with.

Several more years had passed. Olivia had grown into a lovely female shape and had been offered the role of a young hostage in a Hollywood blockbuster starring Bruce Willis.
